Why Closed-Cell Spray Foam Works So Well in Metal Buildings
Metal buildings present different insulation challenges than conventional homes. Metal roof and wall panels can experience large temperature swings, and warm humid air contacting cooler metal surfaces can create condensation. Closed-cell spray foam is commonly recommended by MidState for metal buildings, shops and pole barns because it:
- Adheres directly to properly prepared metal surfaces
- Creates a continuous air seal
- Provides approximately R-7 per inch
- Helps control moisture and condensation
- Adds rigidity compared with softer insulation materials
- Provides high insulation value without requiring a large cavity
For many Middle Tennessee metal buildings, we commonly install approximately 2 inches of closed-cell spray foam on the roof deck, with the wall thickness selected based on how the building will be used.
Storage buildings, workshops, conditioned shops and barndominiums do not always need the same insulation system. We help customers choose the appropriate foam type and thickness for the building instead of simply recommending the most expensive option.
How Much Spray Foam Does My Metal Building Need?
The right amount of spray foam depends on how you plan to use your building. A storage building, working shop, climate-controlled space and barndominium can have very different insulation needs.
STORAGE & BASIC USE
For buildings primarily used for storage or occasional use, the goal may be controlling condensation, reducing temperature swings and protecting what is stored inside. Closed-cell spray foam is commonly used because it provides insulation, air sealing and moisture control in one system.
WORKSHOPS & FREQUENTLY USED BUILDINGS
For shops that will be heated, cooled or used regularly, insulation thickness becomes more important. A common MidState approach is approximately 2 inches of closed-cell foam on the roof deck, with wall thickness selected based on the building and how frequently it will be conditioned.
BARNDOMINIUMS & CONDITIONED SPACES
Buildings intended as living space require a different approach. Insulation levels should be selected around the building design, energy goals and applicable code requirements rather than using a one-size-fits-all metal-building package.
Why Building Dimensions Matter
A 30×40 building has 1,200 square feet of floor area—but that is not the amount of insulation required. We calculate the roof deck, roof pitch, exterior walls, gables and openings to determine the actual sprayable square footage.
