Choosing the Right Insulation for a Barndominium

Barndominiums require more than simply filling wall cavities with insulation. Metal roofing and siding can experience large temperature swings, which makes air sealing, moisture control, and condensation management especially important.
At MidState Spray Foam & Insulation, we evaluate the roof assembly, wall framing, metal panels, intended use of the building, and whether the space will be heated and cooled before recommending an insulation system.
Closed-cell spray foam is commonly used directly against metal roof decks and exterior walls because it creates a strong air seal, helps control moisture, and provides high insulation value in a relatively thin application. Open-cell spray foam may also be appropriate in certain framed wall or roof assemblies depending on the building design.
The goal is to build the insulation system around the building—not force every barndominium into the same solution.
Closed-Cell vs. Open-Cell Spray Foam
Which system is right for your barndominium?
Closed-Cell Spray Foam
Often used on metal roof decks and exterior walls, closed-cell spray foam provides a strong air seal, high insulation value per inch, and excellent moisture resistance.
• High R-value per inch
• Strong moisture control
• Ideal for many metal assemblies
Open-Cell Spray Foam
Open-cell spray foam expands to fill deeper framing cavities and provides excellent air sealing. It can work well in certain framed roof and wall assemblies.
• Excellent air sealing
• Fills deeper cavities
• Cost-effective in the right application
"We recommend the system based on your building—not a one-size-fits-all package."
How We Insulate a Barndominium
The right insulation strategy depends on how each part of the building is constructed and used.

Roof Deck
For many barndominiums, closed-cell spray foam is installed directly to the underside of the metal roof deck to create a strong air seal, help control condensation, and improve thermal performance.
Every barndominium is different. We build the insulation system around the structure, not around a preset package.

Exterior Walls
Wall insulation should match the framing depth, wall assembly, and whether the space will be conditioned. Closed-cell spray foam is often used where moisture control and high R-value per inch are priorities.

Living Areas
Finished living spaces may use spray foam, fiberglass, or a combination depending on the wall and ceiling assembly. The goal is consistent comfort, efficient heating and cooling, and long-term performance.

What Does Spray Foam Cost for a Barndominium?
Barndominium insulation pricing depends on the size of the building, roof pitch, wall height, foam type, application thickness, and how much of the structure is being insulated.
Because every building is different, the most accurate starting point is based on the actual dimensions and insulation system—not a generic square-foot estimate.
Building Size & Roof Pitch
Larger buildings and steeper roof pitches increase the total spray area and material required.
Foam Type & Thickness
Closed-cell and open-cell spray foam are installed at different thicknesses and have different material costs and performance characteristics.
Roof, Walls & Gables
Pricing changes depending on whether you are insulating only the roof deck or fully insulating the roof, exterior walls, and gable ends.
